The Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Football game is on for Friday, July 15 at Darling Stadium at 7:30PM. There are a number of familiar names from The 757 on the East roster. The East will take on the West, including players from Division 6 down to Division 1 from all across the state. Fifteen players from the region made the roster, but some familiar names will be missing.
Hampton placed three players on the East roster. Woodside and Phoebus placed two seniors on the roster. Let’s make this clear, the game is open to Class of 2011 players only. Nansemond River, Poquoson, Ocean Lakes, Kecoughtan, First Colonial, Gloucester and Warwick placed the remaining players.
There will be no Tyree Lee, he’s injured. There’s no David Watford. He’s already up at Virginia. Aaron Matthews of Kecoughtan didn’t sign on. Lafonte Thourogood? He’s off to Vanderbilt already. There are a lot of missing names, but for the most part, they’re missing for a reason.
There’s still reason to celebrate. Twelve local players are getting recognized for their achievements on the gridiron. In fact, both East Team quarterbacks will come from the Peninsula District: Jordan Roby of Phoebus and Zach Tarpey of Gloucester got the nod.
There are plenty of linemen from Hampton Roads on the East Team roster. Jahki Brown-Knightnor of Warwick, Connor Mewbourne of First Colonial, Shawn Fauntleroy of Kecoughtan, Josh Mann of Ocean Lakes, Chris Tarrant of Hampton, Jonathan McLean of Phoebus and Dwayne Alford of Nansemond River will get lots of work in.
You’ll see Kedric Solomon of Woodside at wide receiver and Skylar Hutchinson of Hampton as a kicker/punter. Terrance Tucker of Woodside and Terrance Mack of Hampton will play linebacker. Lucas Hill of Poquoson will appear at defensive back.
Somehow, Sussex Central’s Craishawn Ellis made the West roster as a Center/D-Lineman even though Sussex Central is a local school here.
State Champions Elliot Duty of Poquoson and Stan Sexton of Phoebus will be manning the sidelines as Assistant Coaches for the game.
There’s talent from all over the state on both rosters and they’ll play in front of a 757 crowd at Darling Stadium in a few weeks. Of course, it’s all an exhibition… but where else can you get a football game with helmets and pads at this time of year?
