Phoebus defensive back DeShaun Summers seemingly came out of nowhere.  He was a background player in his junior year, but rose up to take a leadership role in his senior season and it netted him college interest and offers.  Now, Summers has made his college decision and he’s headed north, along with a few other friends from The 757.

Summers was getting interest from schools around the region.  In the end his visit to Morgan State sold him on the school.

“Chowan & Concord offered me.  James Madison and Norfolk State had interest in me.  Christopher Newport offered me financial aid money and William and Mary was waiting on my SAT score.  Virginia Tech and Old Dominion wanted me as a preferred walk-on,” said Summers.

“I went (to Morgan State) over the weekend and loved everything about it.  They actually flew me up there,” commented DeShaun after his visit.  “The coaches and everyone treated me well.  I just felt welcomed.   I feel like it’s just one big family up there. I could see myself fitting in and it being my college home.”

DeShaun became the third Phoebus player to pick a Division I college destination.  Kicker and quarterback Eric Enderson committed to Delaware prior to the start of the season, while wide receiver Romond Deloatch committed to Temple last week.

Summers fits a need for the Bears.  He’s able to play both sides of the ball, but will very likely play his college ball as a defensive back, the same position he manned for the Phantoms.

“I’m going in as a corner.  They expect me to come in and play right away and have a shot at starting,” Summers stated.  ”I’ve been hearing from them since last summer.  The coaches have been staying in contact with me and they never went out of the picture.  They liked my ball skills.  They like how physical I am and they were really impressed by my tackling.”

Of course that’s all in good coaching and good execution.

Summers joins Indian River linebacker Taquon Jackson, Woodside Kicker Chris Moller and Nansemond River running back Lamont Brown as incoming 2012 scholarship athletes for Morgan State.

Summers plans on majoring in Business at Morgan State with a concentration in Accounting.

We’ll have more updates on National Signing Day action throughout the day on Wednesday.
