By any measure, Norview High School had a surprising year.   Coach Greg Gibson came in from California for his first run at an East Coast School.   The Pilots weren’t far off from being a playoff team in a year where they changed the schemes and relied on their athleticism more than ever.  Their early commit didn’t pan out.  Instead, a new offer came in and sent one of their seniors off to college in-state.

Norview quarterback Kwe’shon Williams fit perfectly into the role as an option quarterback.  He was truly a dual threat.  More of a threat to run, but always a factor by making good decisions and distributing the ball well.  That athleticism earned him a partial scholarship offer from James Madison, and he signed his letter of intent on Wednesday.

Williams’ performance at the Dukes’ Virginia Beach Satellite camp last Spring had an impact.  His performance in the season likely sealed the deal.

“James Madison had been looking at him for quite a while,” said Coach Gibson.  “He took an official visit on January 21 and he loved it up there.   He was a three year starter for us and developed a lot in his time here.”  It’s expected that Williams will be a defensive back for JMU.

The Pilots earlier commitment for college didn’t pan out.   It wasn’t a matter of the college pulling a scholarship or any kind of dispute.   It was simply a change of heart.   Defensive back Darius Jones committed to the Richmond Spiders back in July.  He decommitted after deciding in January that he’d rather pursue his academic dreams and attend college at NYU.

“D.J. decided that he won’t continue to play football,” said the coach.  What more can be said?  New York University in Manahattan doesn’t have a football team.

Norview still has a few other players that are looking at college opportunities.  Ronald Bell, lineman Treytonn Norman, and defensive backs Treshawn Weeks and Damiyan Caldwell are drawing interest.   Bell didn’t play in 2011 due to age limitations, but is enrolled at the school.   The four players are getting heavy consideration from a combination of Alderson-Broaddus, Ferrum and Galludet University.

“We waiting for things to fall out after signing day,” stated the coach.

Gibson’s second season at Norview should be an interesting one.  He loses a lot of athletic seniors, and he’ll only have one lineman returning on the offensive line.  He’ll rely heavily on linebacker Cavon Bradford, speedster Daquan Davis, tailback Kevin Hicks and linebacker Bryce Atkins to carry the load in 2012.
