The coaches at Virginia Tech aren’t going to let the dust settle. They offered another 2013 player this week, the night before signing day. The sleeper they’ve offered isn’t going to be a sleeper for long.
Virginia Tech’s offer is to Warhill giant Parker Osterloh. The recruitment of Osterloh, along with Grafton’s Marcus Spearman and Jesse Santiago, could mean that multiple players from the Bay Rivers District could be BCS bound in the Class of 2013. That would be astounding considering that few players in the BRD get Division I offers, even fewer make it to the football field on scholarship at a BCS program. It’s all a part of the rise of football in the Bay Rivers.
Tech is the second school to offer Osterloh, following James Madison. The Warhill lineman and tight end is likely to get more offers, but Tech and JMU may very well be the frontrunners for quite some time.
Osterloh reflected on the offer…
“On Tuesday after school, (Warhill) Coach Jarvis said (Virginia Tech assistant) Coach Newsome wanted me to call him and that Tech was going to offer,” Osterloh said. ”I called Coach Newsome after my basketball practice and he extended the offer. Coach Newsome said he sees a lot in me and I was the first in state lineman Tech has offered. I am very happy about the offer. Tech is definitely high on my list of favorite schools. It says a lot about how highly they think of me for them to offer the day before signing day.”
JMU and Virginia Tech may be the first to the party, but they’re not the only ones interested. Old Dominion and the University of Virginia are expressing serious interest as well.
Osterloh is putting a lot of weight in the academic qualities of his future college home and that puts Virginia Tech in a very positive light, considering Parker’s interests.
“Academics is the major thing for me” Parker said. ”The thing that puts Tech so high on my list is that they have a Vet Med program I’m interested in.”
At 6-7 and 265, Osterloh has college ready size, but he’s going to need to put on muscle mass in order to be the lineman Virginia Tech is going to want him to be. It would be easy to see Parker as a 6-7 or taller, 300 pound plus powerhouse of a lineman once he’s had some time in a college weight room. Basketball is infamous for keeping weight off of athletes and Parker will have to work hard in the Spring and Summer in order build strength and mass going into the football season.
“(In the offseason), one of my assistant basketball coaches will be giving me lots of leg work,” said the lineman. “After basketball, I plan to move into the weightroom to work out with the team.”
With his size and opportunity for growth, Parker Osterloh will certainly see more offers come his way. How quickly will his star rise?
