Grassfield’s Drew Burns had his choices narrowed. It was either going to be Old Dominion or Virginia Tech. The 6-4 215 athletic outside linebacker has the build of a college football player. He starred in Grassfield’s schemes that emphasized the running game and ball control combined with a stout defense. During his visit to Blacksburg this past weekend, Drew made his commitment to Virginia Tech.

Quarterback Frank Brown lit up opposing defenses in 2011. The spread offense at Bethel was designed to do that. Brown distributed the ball well, racking up 1991 passing yards and 20 TDs in 10 regular season games. His top two targets in the passing game finished in the top five regionally in receiving yards.

The Kellam Knights don’t get as much attention as their fellow Beach District teams might, but there’s talent there and colleges have come calling. 6-6 TE/WR Chris Garner is one that’s easy to notice on the field at Kellam. Garner and teammate Jimmy Zaller have made their commitments and will move on to the college level.

Menchville kicker Dillon Christopher impressed fans and college coaches alike when he booted a 60-yard field goal last fall to set a new VHSL record. Now in the offseason, Christopher is gathering college interest and taking visits. This past weekend he made a trip to Virginia Tech’s Junior Day. What did he think of the visit?

Grassfield Big Man Talks W&M Commitment

Grassfield Lineman Michael Garrett (Photo: Stacey Rhea)

Grassfield ran their way to a 9-1 regular season record in 2011. The offensive line bulldozed their way through opposing defenses and big man Michael Garrett was a part of that dominance. The Grizzlies will miss him, but he’s moving on to play college ball. Garrett’s an academically inclined kid. He was courted by Ivies, but found his college home in Williamsburg.

Old Dominion’s return to the gridiron in 2009 after a 60+ year absence might have made JMU’s recruiting suffer. The reasoning behind that school of thought was that the Dukes’ pipeline to 757 players would decline, perhaps rapidly. Not so fast….

Ocean Lakes’ safety Myke Knox is moving on up. First of all, he’s growing out of his position as a safety. Knox is slated to be an outside linebacker on next fall’s Dolphin defense. He’s bigger and stronger than ever, and Myke has his eyes set on a college scholarship.

Woodside Lineman Kyle Westfall (Photo: Andy Hilton/recruit757)

Woodside lineman Kyle Westfall grew to become behemoth on the offensive line for the Wolverines. His 6-4 300 plus pound frame made it much easier for Donnell Lewis and friends to operate the Wing-T. Now Westfall is moving on to the college level, where he’ll continue playing with a Wolverine teammate in a new Division II program.

The 6-4 215 pound tight end and linebacker visited Virginia Tech today and made his commitment. Burns has accepted a preferred walk-on with the Hokies.

Cox LB Torn Between Options

Cox linebacker Jay Brooks has been much heralded for his leadership role on the Falcons Football team and his skill on the high school gridiron. Coaches never fail to praise his abilities or his heart, but college coaches hesitate because he’s shorter than the prototypical linebacker. He’s 5-9 and 195. He’s a beast in the weight room. He has football smarts and he’s good in the classroom. Jay Brooks is still uncommitted.
