Spring Break is unfortunately over and the beginning of spring sports is in full swing in the state of Virginia, however a new twist has been added around the Hampton Roads area and other areas of the Commonwealth: Spring Football! With the new approval of out-of-season practice rules developed by the Virginia High School League this past year, schools will be allowed to practice football in the spring season.

Grafton Newcomer Jacob Mazgajewski (Photo: Andy Hilton/recruit757)

Grafton big man Jake Mazgajewski is still a bit of a secret. He arrived to the region as an Air Force kid last August and spent last year adjusting to the wide open offense run by Coach Jared Van Acker. At 6-6 255, Maz is a bit of a tweener, believe it or not. He can cover multiple positions, yet colleges are still trying to figure out how they’d like to use him.

The best way to get the attention of college coaches is to go out and see them yourself. Being proactive is the key to kickstarting your recruitment. That’s just what Brody Scott did over Spring Break and now he’s on the radar for schools across the Mid-Atlantic.

You know your parents love you when they’re willing to build Spring Break around your college football aspirations. Now Marcus is well traveled and certainly experienced after taking a swing through the South.

Virginia Tech Visit In Santiago’s Future, ODU In The Mix

Grafton WR Jesse Santiago (Photo: Andy Hilton/recruit757)

Grafton WR/DB Jesse Santiago had a stellar junior year. His football Clippers made it to the Division 4 State Semifinals. His basketball Clippers made it to the Group AA State Finals just a few weeks ago. Jesse starred on both teams. Santiago and his teammates were disappointed to come so close but fall short this year. It does hold promise for the future and for his recruitment.

The nice thing about nearby schools is that student-athletes can make their visits anytime. That’s what happened Wednesday when Jamestown High School linebacker Brody Scott paid a visit to the Spiders. Recruiting coach Wayne Lineburg invited Brody up and the mid-week visit showed the linebacker just what he needed to see.

York QB Johnston Lands With Captains

York QB Alex Johnston (Photo: Andy Hilton/recruit757)

York quarterback Alex Johnston has finally nailed down his college decision. The Bay Rivers gunslinger set the school record for passing yards last fall and he was a stellar student as well. That put Alex in the position of considering many options before reaching a conclusion. Johnston received interest from Ivy League schools, in-state Division I FCS schools, as well as Division II and Division III schools.

Tight ends can be the unsung heroes of the passing game. At York High School in 2011, the passing game was king. Quarterback Alex Johnston set a career passing yardage record last year, and the Falcons rolled their record to 11-0 before falling in the Region 1 Final. York scored almost 37 points a game in their wins. Now Myers is taking his game to college.
