Churchland High School brass decided to keep it within the family. Former head coach Cedric Cradle decided to step down at the end of last season, leaving after back-to-back District Championships and leaving an opening for a new coach.
Oscar Smith Backer Closing In On Decision
Oscar Smith High School has produced some significant college ready athletes over the past few years. Coach Rich Morgan has sent players to Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama and Penn State recently, and the 2011 class already has Quinta Funderburk going to Arkansas, Mylon Blueford going to Richmond and Jaston George going to Syracuse. There’s a strong possibility another half dozen seniors at Oscar Smith will go on to play college ball.
UVA Leads FBS Recruiting In The 757
It was approximately one year ago when the University of Virginia held their press conference to announce the hiring of Mike London as the head football coach. London specifically noted that Southeastern Virginia would be his number one recruiting priority. Fast forward to now, and the results back that up that promise in the number of local commitments.
Pilot’s All-Tidewater Team Announced
Here’s the All-Tidewater (Southside) team as announced by the Virginian-Pilot. This is an annual All-Star team that combines the best of the Beach, Southeastern and Eastern Districts, plus all Private schools playing football on the southside.
Division 5 State Semifinal Preview: Phoebus @ Dinwiddie
Haven’t we been down this road before? This year’s Division 5 State semifinals will set the stage for a rematch pitting the Eastern Region Champion Phoebus Phantoms against the Central Region Champion Dinwiddie Generals. These two teams met at Lane Stadium, home of the Virginia Tech Hokies, in 2008 with the Division 5 State Title on the line.
Friday Night Recap
There were games of impact all over the region, even though there weren’t many playoff spots up for grabs this year. The season ended with a bang, including a game winning kick at First Colonial, playoff hopes dashed at Indian River, and two Peninsula teams that are still waiting to find out their fate.
Hampton Tops Menchville in Playoff Tuneup
It was truly a tale of two teams Thursday night. Hampton came in at 8-1 and was looking to close out the regular season with a win, and perhaps tweak a few things before the playoffs. Menchville on the other hand was simply finishing their season. It was Homecoming and Senior Night for Hampton.
Playoff Countdown – One Game To Go
With one game to go in Divisions 5 and 6, the playoff teams are almost set. In Division 6, we know who’s in and who’s out. In Division 5, seven teams are in and as many as four teams have a shot at the last playoff berth. Then it’s just a matter of seeding.
Oscar Smith Duo Makes A Trip For Terps
This year, Oscar Smith has a new quarterback at the helm. Jaylian “J.J.” Williamson (JR QB 5-9 155) replaced Phillip Sims in the spring and came in with some big shoes to fill. As a first time, junior starter at QB, Williamson has excelled. The Oscar Smith offense has shown no sign of waning under J.J.’s leadership. Sequan Gooding (SR WR/DB 6-0 170) is one of several senior leaders on the Oscar Smith defense. He’s rock solid in the secondary and he’s a great option for Williamson in the passing game.
