Raysean Richardson really began turning heads as a Junior linebacker for Oscar F. Smith High School in the fall of 2009. That enormously talented team started the season hosting Venice High School of Florida on national TV on ESPNU. Seniors on that team included top QB Phillips Sims (signed with Alabama, soon to be Virginia), another linebacker standout in Jeremy Majette (Old Dominion) and the electrifying wide receiver in Charlie Ricks (Norfolk State). Unfortunately, none of those three remains at the original school of choice.

The Phoebus Phantoms have had a heck of a run in High School Football. They’ve won four straight championships in Division 5. That kind of dominance breeds good recruiting as the top players in the program move on to play college football. In the case of defensive back Isaiah Jones-Clark, it came down to football opportunities and basketball opportunities. For Isaiah, basketball won out.

Warwick kicker John “Patou” Griggs had a roller coaster ride with his recruitment. Norview Head Coach Greg Gibson hasn’t been at Norview High School long. It’s been just over a year since the Government Teacher and Football coach made the move from California to Norfolk. In his first year at the school, he took the athletes he inherited, lead them from 0-10 to a winning record, and now he’s seeing an unprecedented number go off to play college ball.

There are still players in the 2012 class looking for offers. For Churchland kicker Matt Stanek, 2011 was a year of promise and a year of disappointment. His senior year performance was fine, but the circumstances were less than ideal.

Lakeland quarterback Zach Super was on a fast track last fall when he took over the reins for the Cavaliers. Super missed football in his sophomore season due to a transfer from King’s Fork, but he was ready to revive Lakeland in his junior year. Zach suffered a season ending knee injury just a few games into the season and saw his junior year derailed. His weekend visit to Old Dominion was the beginning of a campaign to get his recruitment on track.

The Kellam Knights don’t get as much attention as their fellow Beach District teams might, but there’s talent there and colleges have come calling. 6-6 TE/WR Chris Garner is one that’s easy to notice on the field at Kellam. Garner and teammate Jimmy Zaller have made their commitments and will move on to the college level.
